Saxophone, Clarinet, & Flute Lessons

Woodwind Lessons for Kids and Adults in Seattle

Whether you’re a kid starting out in school band or an adult picking your old woodwind back up for the first time in years, our teachers meet you where you are. Meter Music School offers private saxophone, clarinet, and flute lessons at two Seattle studios — the Central District and Columbia City — for complete beginners through advanced players.

What to Expect in a Lesson

Lessons run 30, 45, or 60 minutes, once a week. Your teacher builds a plan around your goals — supporting school band repertoire, jazz and improvisation, classical technique, or a mix — rather than a fixed curriculum everyone follows the same way. Early lessons typically cover embouchure, breath support, and tone production, since woodwinds ask for a bit of physical setup before the music itself comes easily. Students already playing in a school program often use lessons to work ahead of the group or dig deeper into technique; adult returners tend to move faster once the fundamentals come back.

Saxophone, Clarinet, or Flute?

Families sometimes ask which of the three to start on. All three are common school band instruments and share some underlying technique, so switching between them later is possible if your interest shifts. Clarinet and flute are often introduced a bit earlier due to their size and reed/embouchure demands, while saxophone can be a natural next step for a clarinet player. Your teacher can help you decide based on age, size, and the sound you’re drawn to.

Adult Woodwind Students

If you’re an adult considering lessons, you’re not the exception here. A lot of our adult woodwind students are returning to an instrument from school band years ago — lessons for adults tend to move at a faster pace and lean more on the music and goals you bring in, whether that’s picking up where you left off, joining a community band, or exploring jazz for the first time.

Our Studios

Central District — 2110 E Union St, Seattle, WA 98122

Columbia City — 4435 Rainier Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118

Both studios have dedicated practice rooms — a space to focus on your playing that’s often hard to find at home. Families and adult students from Madrona, Leschi, Capitol Hill, Mt. Baker, Hillman City, Seward Park, and Beacon Hill study with us at one location or the other, whichever is the shorter drive.

Common Questions

Do I need my own instrument to start? Yes — our team can help point you toward the right beginner option once you know which instrument you’re starting on.

How much are lessons? See our Tuition & Fees page →

Can I switch between instruments or teachers later? Yes! Students can change to a different instrument or a different teacher at any time. You can make these changes in your portal or work with our front desk staff to go over the options.
