Voice Lessons for Kids and Adults in Seattle

Whether you’re enrolling a five-year-old in their first singing lessons or working on your own voice for the first time as an adult, our teachers meet you where you are. Meter Music School offers private voice lessons at two Seattle studios — the Central District and Columbia City — for complete beginners through experienced singers.

What to Expect in a Voice Lesson

Lessons run 30, 45, or 60 minutes, once a week. Your teacher builds a plan around the kind of singing you actually want to do — pop, musical theater, classical, R&B, or a mix — rather than a fixed curriculum everyone follows the same way. Lessons typically cover breath support, pitch, range, and tone, along with the songs you’re working on. Younger students often start with simple songs and ear games; teens and adults tend to move faster into repertoire and technique they’re specifically after.

Many of our voice students also take piano lessons alongside voice, since the two reinforce each other well — especially for anyone interested in singing while playing, or in songwriting.

When to Start

Five years old is a common starting age, but it depends on the child and what they’re ready for. There’s no upper limit on the other end. A meaningful share of our voice students are adults — some looking to finally use their voice with confidence, others training seriously for performance or audition.

Adult Voice Students

If you’re an adult considering voice lessons, you’re not the exception here. A lot of adults come to us self-conscious about singing, sometimes after being told years ago that they “can’t sing” — that’s rarely true, and it’s one of the most common things a good teacher can undo. Lessons for adults tend to move at a faster pace and lean more on the music and goals you bring in, whether that’s finally singing karaoke without dread, preparing for an audition, or just building a skill you’ve always wanted.

Both studios have dedicated practice rooms — a private space to work on your voice that’s often hard to find at home. Families and adult students from Madrona, Leschi, Capitol Hill, Mt. Baker, Hillman City, Seward Park, and Beacon Hill study with us at one location or the other, whichever is the shorter drive.

Common Questions

Do I need any experience to start? No — most students start with no formal training at all. Your teacher will meet you at your current level, whether that’s your first lesson ever or years of choir.

Can I switch between voice and another instrument later? Yes! Students can change to a different instrument or a different teacher at any time. You can make these changes in your portal or work with our front desk staff to go over the options.
