Drum Lessons for Kids and Adults in Seattle

Whether you’re enrolling a five-year-old in their first lessons or picking up sticks for the first time as an adult, our teachers meet you where you are. Meter Music School offers private drum lessons at two Seattle studios — the Central District and Columbia City — for complete beginners through advanced players.

What to Expect in a Drum Lesson

Lessons run 30, 45, or 60 minutes, once a week, on a full kit in our studios. Your teacher builds a plan around the music you actually want to play — rock, pop, jazz, funk, or a mix — rather than a fixed curriculum everyone follows the same way. Lessons typically cover rhythm, coordination between hands and feet, reading, and playing along to songs. Younger students often start with simple grooves and rhythm games; older beginners and adults tend to move faster into full songs and technique.

Many students also explore music production alongside drums, since the two connect naturally for anyone interested in beat-making or recording.

When to Start

Five years old is a common starting age, but it depends on the child — drumming asks for a bit more coordination than some instruments, and your teacher can help you gauge readiness. There’s no upper limit on the other end. A meaningful share of our drum students are adults, some picking the instrument up for the first time, others returning to it after years away.

Adult Drum Students

If you’re an adult considering lessons, you’re not the exception here. Adult students learn differently than kids — lessons tend to move at a faster pace and lean more on the songs and styles you actually want to play. Whether your goal is finally joining a band, playing along to your favorite records, or building real technique, we’ll build the lesson around that.

Practicing Without Waking the Neighbors

One of the most common questions from drum parents and adult beginners alike: what about practice at home? We can show you how to utilize low-volume cymbals and heads to keep the noise down and protect your hearing. Many students also start on a practice pad or electronic kit.

Both studios have dedicated practice rooms with full kits — a space to jam that is sometimes hard to find at home. Families and adult students from Madrona, Leschi, Capitol Hill, Mt. Baker, Hillman City, Seward Park, and Beacon Hill study with us at one location or the other, whichever is the shorter drive.

Common Questions

Do I need a drum kit at home to start? No — many students start with a practice pad or electronic kit at home and do their full-kit playing during lessons. [See “Practicing Without Waking the Neighbors” above.]

Can I switch between drums and another instrument later? Yes! Students can change to a different instrument or a different teacher at any time. You can make these changes in your portal or work with our front desk staff to go over the options.
