Ukulele Lessons for Kids and Adults in Seattle

Whether you’re enrolling a four-year-old in their first lessons or picking up ukulele for the first time as an adult, our teachers meet you where you are. Meter Music School offers private ukulele lessons at two Seattle studios — the Central District and Columbia City — for complete beginners through advanced players.

What to Expect in a Ukulele Lesson

Lessons run 30, 45, or 60 minutes, once a week. Ukulele is one of the fastest instruments to start playing real songs on — a small, light instrument with a forgiving four-string setup that gets students strumming recognizable songs within the first few lessons, not months in. Your teacher builds a plan around the music you actually want to play — pop, folk, island styles, or a mix — rather than a fixed curriculum everyone follows the same way.

When to Start

Four years old is a common starting age for ukulele — younger than most instruments, since its small size and simple chord shapes make it approachable for little hands well before guitar becomes comfortable. In fact, we often recommend ukulele as the starting instrument for kids ages 4-6 who are interested in guitar, with a switch to guitar once they’re a bit older. There’s no upper limit on the other end — a meaningful share of our ukulele students are adults.

Adult Ukulele Students

If you’re an adult considering lessons, you’re not the exception here. Ukulele has become a popular starting point for adults who want to make real musical progress without the steeper early learning curve of guitar or piano — it’s genuinely one of the fastest paths to playing songs you recognize. Whether your goal is picking up a few songs for a trip, playing along with friends, or building toward something more serious, we’ll build the lesson around that.

Baker, Hillman City, Seward Park, and Beacon Hill study with us at one location or the other, whichever is the shorter drive.

Common Questions

Do I need my own ukulele to start? Yes, but it’s an inexpensive instrument to get started on compared to most — your teacher can help point you toward a good beginner option once you’re enrolled.

How much are lessons? See our Tuition & Fees page →

Can I switch between ukulele and another instrument later? Yes! Students can change to a different instrument or a different teacher at any time. You can make these changes in your portal or work with our front desk staff to go over the options.
